Summer break has me searching for the perfect summer book to enjoy.  I must admit that my reading has been slowing down, our lives have been a bit crazy lately so I suppose that is why.  But, I am here once again to tell you how I am doing on my 2019 Reading Goal.  I have read 11 books so far in 2019!!  I am thrilled with this number and so excited to share a review on my most recent read.

I had the opportunity to read The Summer of Sunshine and Margot from # 1 New York Times bestselling author, Susan Mallery a few days before the official release.  With summer in the title I knew it would end up being one of my top summer reads.  I ate this book up in just a few days, which is huge for me.  So let me tell you now…add The Summer of Sunshine and Margot to your summer reading list NOW!

The Summer of Sunshine and Margot by Susan Mallery

The Baxter sisters come from a long line of women with disastrous luck in love. But this summer, Sunshine and Margot will turn disasters into destiny.

As an etiquette coach, Margot teaches her clients to fit in. But she’s never faced a client like Bianca, an aging movie star who gained fame—and notoriety—through a campaign of shock and awe. Schooling Bianca on the fine art of behaving like a proper diplomat’s wife requires intensive lessons, forcing Margot to move into the monastery turned mansion owned by the actress’s intensely private son. Like his incredible home, Alec’s stony exterior hides secret depths Margot would love to explore. But will he trust her enough to let her in?

Sunshine has always been the good-time sister, abandoning jobs to chase after guys who used her, then threw her away. No more. She refuses to be “that girl” again. This time, she’ll finish college, dedicate herself to her job as a nanny, and she 100 percent will not screw up her life again by falling for the wrong guy. Especially not the tempting single dad who also happens to be her boss.

My Review of The Summer of Sunshine and Margot

I love chic lit books.  I get lost in them.  I love the humor and the love stories and I have to say, The Summer of Sunshine and Margot is absolutely the perfect combination of these characteristics.   In my opinion, a perfect summer book in the Women’s Fiction genre is a book that you start reading and you can instantly feel like you are friends with the characters or you can completely relate to the characters.

As I started reading this book I really enjoyed the way that the author did her character building.  We met the two main characters, Sunshine and Margot, separately but then we also started to see their relationship as twins.  While they are in completely different stages of life concerning their careers they are both striving for the same goal – they want to better their lives and start making choices that better themselves.  I thought that these characters were shown as strong and motivated women.  Sure there was some hot and steamy parts to this book but overall this novel shared how these two women decided to look at life differently and make some moves that other people in their past never did before.  I enjoyed all of the dialogue with Sunshine and Margot. They reminded me of similar conversations with my close friends.

I thought the author did a good job with giving a solid backstory to Sunshine and Margot. Their mother ran off and left them as did their grandmother. The great grandmother raised them and had dreams of one of them becoming Miss America one day.  From their childhood they were caught dealing with being abandoned and the lack of any solid relationships.  As adults their track record of men was not good, they end up picking losers and or people who just use and throw them away.

My only complaint about this book was that Sunshine’s story seemed very rushed towards the end.  I wanted the book to continue for a bit longer and see how both Sunshine and Margot got on with their relationships, personal journey and life goals.

This is my first experience of reading one of Susan Mallery’s books but I can tell you it will not be the last!  I truly enjoyed this book.  My choice for book 11 for 2019 was a perfect combo of a romance and humor.  I would recommend The Summer of Sunshine and Margot to anyone the loves a great love story and chic lit for a great summer read.
