Back-To-School season also means homework season. Without a space for an office we decided to create a portable and functional homework station for the new school year.
Back-To-School Season Is Here!
Wow, where did the summer go? While we have really loved our summer break it is pretty clear that we are all ready to get back into the school swing of things. I don’t know about your family but ours just does a lot better on a more rigid routine. Now, I also have a confession, I LOVE BACK TO SCHOOL SHOPPING!! I have such fond memories of heading to the store with my mom to gather all of the school supplies off of my classroom list and now that we have two kids in GRADE school – no more “little kids”- I am excited to share my excitement in school supply shopping with them.
School Supply Shopping At OfficeMax
Last weekend we decided to work on getting all prepared for heading back to school so we went to our local OfficeMax. I love shopping for back-to-school supplies at OfficeMax because you can literally get everything off of your classroom supply list in one stop. Now, as we walked in I was way more excited than the kids but once they started looking at all the fun supplies they were just as excited as I was!
Once we packed our cart full of the items the kids needed for school – including their backpacks, folders, art supplies and pencils, we started working on a project that I had been envisioning since last school year! Project Create A Homework Station! Since we do not have extra space in our house for an office we sometimes struggled to find the perfect space for the kids to have access to supplies to complete their homework last year.
Creating A Homework Station In Minutes
Most of the time the kids will be completing their homework at our kitchen table. I was getting really sick of having random paper, binders, crayons and pencils all over the kitchen table so I knew I wanted some kind of container to keep all of the kids’ at-home school supplies in one place.
To create our homework station we first went to the storage aisle at OfficeMax and found a fantastic rolling cart that was not only the perfect size but a great color for our living room. This cart fits perfectly by our home entertainment center and since it is an “open” look it will be able to be kept cleaned and organized easily. Once the rolling cart was found it was time to find all of the THINGS!!
Add Some Educational Activity Kits To Your Cart
In true Jude fashion as we were wandering through out OfficeMax he found some great educational activity kits on an end cap. This kid is all about STEAM – Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics – so whenever he sees a kit like this he is instantly asking for his birthday money he has saved up!
When Jude completes a project that takes a lot of concentration and brain power we can see him feeling empowered. Finding that confidence is huge at this age for an anxious child like Jude. School supply shopping is just one part of back-to-school prep. Having our kids walk into school with the confidence and self-esteem to take on a whole new year of challenges is so important for us as well.
We took home the Juku LED Lightshow Coding Kit for Jude and he completed it with in an hour. Seeing him run inside, open the kit and get to work made my heart happy. It is really incredible how with every year of school the kids are able to tackle activities like this on their own. Proud parent moment! And guess what? This was a perfect activity that was not only fun but educational!
Filling Our Homework Station
I could literally spend hours in OfficeMax and end up having to take out a loan for all of the supplies we walk out with but for our little homework station we kept on budget and were able to create a perfect and functional station that will really help with the transition into homework again this school year.
Teagan is just like me. Getting new notebooks, pretty colored pencils and markers makes her happy too. Yes, we have plenty of these from last year but getting a new set of any school supply is what is so exciting about this time of the year!
Items To Add To A Homework Station:
- Pencils
- Pencil Sharpener
- Scissors
- Watercolor paints
- Tape
- Glue sticks
- Markers
- Crayons
- Colored Pencils
- Ruler
- Calculator
- Erasers
- Binder with loose leaf paper
- Notebooks
- Graph paper
- Clipboard
All of those items fit into our Homework Station and we still have room for more if the homework that is brought home needs something else. No matter what your child’s homework looks like, make sure you stop in at Office Depot or OfficeMax for all of your homework and school supply shopping. You will walk out feeling accomplished and ready for the school year!
Prepared For A Great School Year
I am feeling really excited for this new school year and I think that with this great homework station the kids will have a great year. OfficeMax helped me create an organizational tool that is going to help me give my kiddos an academic advantage as well as enabling them to express themselves and succeed as they enter the 1st and 3rd grade this year!!
