So, you took the plunge and scheduled your first Boudoir photo session.  Congratulations!  It is completely normal to have some anxiety over what to expect when going to your Boudoir photo session, but what helps is going into the session with some idea of what to expect!  Once again, this is a bit of a different article for me to write. While these photos make me incredibly proud and amazing, this is a very personal share for me.  I appreciate your professional and kind responses as you read through this article.

Disclaimer – if you are uncomfortable seeing a woman’s body…stop scrolling.  But to be clear these photos show NO nudity.  Every outfit featured is similar to what you would see at a local pool or beach.

A Good Chat With Your Photographer

Before your session begins, it is important to have some kind of relationship with your photographer.  This could be a simple email, phone call or in person meeting.  Honestly, I could not imagine walking into a session without meeting a photographer first.  I think these chats allow for the photographer to help you have the best experience as well.

When you arrive to your session it is a good idea to talk to your photographer about what you wish to achieve from this session.  Keep in mind that your photographer is magic but he or she will not magically give you your body from high school.  Keep your wishes realistic.  Be okay with who you are in this moment.  But be clear with your photographer why you booked this session.  Maybe you are getting married, want to surprise your significant other with these photos for an anniversary or maybe these photos are strictly for you.  No matter your reason, communicate that with your photographer.

Bring Multiple Outfits

When you book your session you will find yourself wondering what to wear.  I have to be honest, I bought a lot of outfits and used the suggestions my photographer offered.  I walked into my session with 6 different options and figured I knew exactly which outfits we would use but I was wrong.  Boudoir photographers know what types of outfits photograph best on certain bodies.  Be prepared to be surprised with what outfits are used and be open to those suggestions.  I suggest going in with more than you think so it allows for some additional options if needed.

Extra tip – do not wear underwear or a bra to your session and make sure to wear loose fitting clothing.  This will keep those lines and marks off of your body!

Relax

Seriously!  Just relax!  You are not the first person that this photographer has seen in underwear and you certainly won’t be the last.  Stop body shaming yourself and find that confidence.  Take a breath and walk into your session like you would a spa.  This day is about you, and you need to enjoy it and relax! Let your photographer do the hard work.

Hair and Make-Up

Every photographer is different.  However, the session is set-up, you will need your make-up and hair done. My session included my make-up and hair which added even more fun!  I love getting my make-up and hair done professionally.  My make-up and hair were done wonderfully but not the way I wear my hair or make-up on a daily basis.  So, if you are doing your own, make sure you do a little extra to your look.  Add some volume to your hair.  Add those eyelashes and find a great bold lip color.  As someone that doesn’t feel comfortable doing make-up and hair I would totally pay for someone to do mine for a shoot if it wasn’t included.  Consider it some extra pampering on this special day!

Be Ready For Some Work

Once your shoot starts you will be listening to your photographer on how to sit, stand, lay, smile, etc.  As I said, let your photographer do the hard work but you will be feeling this work through out the session.  With every tight tummy and pointed toes your muscles will feel it!   You might have a few outfit changes but for the most part you will be moving and posing for your entire session.  You will feel the work the next day!

Have Fun

You will laugh, you will find your groove and you will get a work out!  No seriously, all of these things which means you will have fun and get excited just thinking about the next opportunity you might have to do another session.  Laughing really is the best medicine and through out my shoot I was able to laugh and have a really great time with my photographer.  At one point during my session I just felt it – I felt those moments of confidence that had me ready for the next pose.

Enjoy This Empowerment

Through out the session, I felt strong, beautiful and most importantly, comfortable.  Again, who would have thought?  No matter your relationship status or past experiences the feeling of empowerment is something that every woman needs to feel.  A Boudoir session has a therapeutic effect.  I find my empowerment by thinking back to my session and looking at my photos.  To be clear, these photos are for me, in my moments of feeling down, defeated or shamed I make sure to take time to see the whole me captured in this photos.

Enjoy your day.  Enjoy this time.  Enjoy your body.  And do this for you!

I cannot say enough good about Darci and if you are in the Denver area you must book with her ASAP.  (TELL HER I SENT YOU!) But, if you are not local, I highly recommend you taking the time to research highly rated Boudoir photographers in your area and book a session.  There will always be something or an excuse that gets in your way.  Time is ticking and this experience will change the way you look at yourself and your body.

For those wondering…yes I show these to my friends and family.  I am proud of them and believe me, you will be too!   Previously, I would have worried about what others would have thought about these photos.  I would have had the excuse of my weight being too high.  I would have wondered what I would do with the photos after the shoot.  Well I am hear to tell you…these reasons and excuses are silly.  Don’t let them hold you back from an experience that will transform your views of your self for the positive!
