Well I did not finish my 13th book as fast as I was hoping I would but I am still really excited to hit that lucky number 13 in 2020!!  For my 13th book I picked up another book from one of my favorites, Katherine Center!  The Bright Side Of Disaster by Katherine Center is one of her earlier books that I have had on my bookshelf for awhile.  If you have been following my book reviews you know that I LOVE Katherine Center’s books so it should be no surprise that I loved this one as well.

Book 13 Read In 2020

The Bright Side Of Disaster by Katherine Center. Chic lit books to read. Chic Lit books. Must read books for young adults. Fun books to read on vacation. Katherine Center books.

The Bright Side Of Disaster by Katherine Center

Jenny Harris always expected that she’d fall in love, get married, and have a baby–in that order. Now, very pregnant and not quite married, she actually doesn’t mind that she and her live-in fiancé, Dean, accidentally started their family a little earlier than planned; she’s happy to have so much to look forward to. But Dean–whom Jenny loves enough to overlook his bad facial hair, his smoking habit, and his total commitment to a cheesy cover band–is acting distant, and not in a pre-wedding-jitters kind of way. The night he runs out for cigarettes and just doesn’t come back, he demotes himself from future husband to sperm donor. And the very next day, Jenny goes into labor.

In the months that follow, Jenny plunges into a life she never anticipated: single motherhood. At least with the sleep deprivation, sore boobs, and fits of crying (both hers and the baby’s), there’s not much time to dwell on her broken heart. And things start looking up. She learns how to do everything one-handed, makes friends in a mommy group, and even manages to give dating tips to her sweet, clueless father–who’s trying to court her sassy mother again, fifteen years after their divorce. She also gets to know a handsome, helpful neighbor–with a knack for soothing babies–who invites her out dancing. But Dean is never far from Jenny’s thoughts or, it turns out, her doorstep, and in the end Jenny must choose between the old life she thought she wanted and the new life she’s been lucky to find.

My Review of The Bright Side Of Disaster

I loved this book.  Yes, it took me a little longer than it should have to read but this great novel had me relating to Jenny from the very beginning.  Since going through a divorce, I have had a lot of alone challenges.  No, I am not a new mom, nor did I go through a birth on my own but I have had to step out of my normal in the last year and take on some challenges.  While those challenges are hard in the moment, they are super empowering when I complete them.

Jenny may have needed a shower desperately but she came out of this experience with the best.  Now, this whole story isn’t a new story to the world of literature but Katherine and her amazing writing makes it a story that we can all relate too not to mention, I want to be friends with Jenny!  Because I am someone that loves to know what happens next, I am still left here wondering….what is Jenny doing now??  I wish there as a bit more follow up.  As for Dean…he drove me crazy.  I could not believe the way he acted and that was one area that I wish Katherine would have given Jenny more of a backbone….kick him out!!!  No one deserves to be treated like that!!

The Bright Side of Disaster may not have a ton of depth but it was a book that I really enjoyed.  A typical chic lit but one I could really relate to in my current situation.  I recommend this book to anyone that wants a good chic lit book  – great for poolside reading or cozy mountain cabin reading!

Book 13 was refreshing and I found myself relating to Jenny a lot.  I would consider this book chic lit and it was much needed to help me get back into my reading groove. While I am still pretty far from my goal for 2020, I am hoping to keep making big progress towards 24 books read!! I am always looking for new books to add to my reading list so please share some books you have really enjoyed recently.  Make sure you check out my 2020 Reading List and Goal too.  Maybe you can add some of my books to your list this year!
