Pepernoten - Dutch Holiday Cookies

These delicious, bite-sized, spicy cookies are traditionally eaten for the holiday of Sinterklaas.

  • 1/2 cup butter softened
  • 3/4 cup brown sugar
  • 2 tsp speculaas spice
  • pinch of salt
  • 1 1/4 cup Self-Rising Flour
  • 3 TBSP milk
  • 4 TBSP sugar


  1. Preheat oven to 325 degrees. 

  2. Cream butter, brown sugar, speculaas spice and salt together in a medium mixing bowl. 

  3.  Add the self-raising flour and mix well. You might have to get your fingers messy and use your hands for this one. 

  4. Add the milk a TBSP at a time, mixing after. When the dough is smooth, enough milk is added. 

  5. Form the dough into a disk, wrap in plastic wrap and leave to rest for at least one hour in the fridge.

  6. Prepare baking sheets with baking spray and begin making small balls of the dough. No bigger than an inch.  

  7. Place the dough balls on the prepared baking sheets keeping them spread out as they will bake larger. 

  8. Sprinkle sugar on top of each dough ball. 

  9. Bake at 325 degrees for 12 minutes. Once baked, remove from baking sheet and let cool.  ENJOY!
