Hunger is real.  No, I am not talking about those afternoon munchies you feel before it is time for dinner, I am talking about true hunger.
FACT – One in five children in America live in households without consistent access to adequate food.
Read that again and think about the number of children you know.  Hunger is all of us.  It is present even if we do not see it.
These two are my heart, I love them something fierce and the thought of them feeling true hunger makes my heart hurt.  We are blessed but learning more about the Hunger Is campaign has really opened my eyes to the epidemic we should all work on ending – end Childhood Hunger In America.
If you shop at Safeway or Albertsons stores I am sure you have seen the Hunger Is signage and opportunities to donate.
Recently, we have been struggling getting the kids to eat and we have noticed we are wasting a lot of food.  One afternoon we went grocery shopping at Safeway and I saw this change donation box with the Hunger Is logo on it.  I instantly asked for more information and decided to make a teachable moment for the kids right there in the store!
I talked to Jude and Teagan about how we are able to afford food, snacks and meals for them every day and that there are some children who are not that blessed.  I named off 5 of their friends and said that one of those friends might be hungry.  MINDS BLOWN!
This simple discussion at the register has now turned into them wanted to bring their pennies with us to the store to put in the change boxes.  I love that our Safeway has this “physical” way to donate – perfect for young growing minds!

From September 1 through September 30 2015, Albertsons/Safeway is raising awareness and helping relief childhood hunger in America, including providing volunteer hours and funds that will improve health outcomes for hungry children and their families.

You still have time to help this amazing cause in September!

Ways to Support Hunger Is:

  1. Donate at Hungry Is campaign website.
  2. Shop at Safeway/Albertsons stores and donate at the pin pad or donation tabs at the register when you pay for your groceries. Our store also had the change boxes pictured. Safeway Foundation and the Entertainment Industry Foundation (EIF) will help manage the local distribution of funds collected by store to their local food banks in the communities in which the Albertsons Safeway family of stores operates.
  3. Purchase participating product(s) for the “Hunger Is” campaign – specialty marked boxes and products.
Brands to add to your shopping list:
  • Marie Calender’s
  • Healthy Choice
  • Bertolli’s
  • PF Changs brands
  • Coke
  • Unilever
  • Kellogg’s
  • Campbell’s

Every designated item supports the “Hunger Is,” helping connect hungry kids in our community neighborhoods to healthy foods!  So many items to choose from too – a great way to add to the giant “pot” to help important cause.

How do you teach your kids about the Childhood Hunger epidemic we have in America?

This is a sponsored conversation written by me on behalf of Albertsons Safeway . The opinions and text are all mine.
