I remember when I first started my blog… well, it was a journal more than a blog. That was close to 10 years ago! Compared to now, that was a different stage of our life. New careers, being child-free and living the life. By living the life I mean sleeping in, watching something other than the Disney Channel on TV and going to the bathroom alone. But, when I started writing, I was writing for me. As I grew as a writer, I found people who appreciated what I was sharing.
Now years later, the influencer marketing world has changed in every way possible. But as an influencer, we have the responsibility to our readers to continue that authentic voice, the voice that had them coming back in the first place.
How to Keep an Authentic Voice
The question is, how do influencers keep that authentic voice in their work? Here are a few tips to make sure you are are staying in your authentic voice.
Remember Why You Write
Some days, I need a reminder about why I started this career as an influencer. When I stop and think about why I love doing what I am doing I find that my authentic voice shines through my words. Even in sponsored content, this is possible. This is what brands want as well!
I know what you are thinking – all of the specs and assets that are required in sponsored content make that hard. But really, when you dig deep and find that reason of why you are sharing your story, it becomes easier. You are talented and people are reading your story, let them understand the reason.
This goes back to the whole sponsored content discussion. How does one make an advertisement authentic? You tell your story, that’s how! Find the reason why that product resonates with you. Do not just make it a commercial. Share your personal story with every post you create. Your readers want to see you too! Share photos that are cohesive with the brand.
Being an influencer you might find yourself blessed with many opportunities. Be thoughtful about those opportunities. Do they fit your audience? Do they fit you? If a sponsored opportunity doesn’t align with your overall focus, then just don’t do it. This area can get lost on many influencers who say yes to everything that comes there way. Even if’s not a good fit for their audience. It’s important to stay consistent as an influencer and accept campaigns that align with your personal brand.
Listen To Your Readers
It is important to listen to your audience. Take the time to communicate with your readers and understand what they are looking for in your content. You might find that a certain way that you write may reach your readers better.
Let Them See YOU
I am so guilty of this. I need to show more of ME!
There are times I find myself hiding behind my words. We have all seen the Pinterest perfect pictures and blog posts, but showing the reality is what brings authenticity to your audience. Show yourself in pictures and be real with your readers. It’s okay to just get real with your audience when it’s appropriate. Trust is found on both sides of the computer. Sure, we have to stay professional but being real can be done appropriately too. It is time to remind your readers why you started this space as well.
