We are incredibly proud of Jude’s reading skills and interests and over the years we have found a number of books and series of books that have become favorites. Now, before we get into our list, I want to clarify, obviously girls can read these books too. Jude is 8 years old but reads at a 4th grade reading level (at least). That being said, we have found that finding books that are age appropriate and at his reading level can be difficult.
Our Favorite Books for Ages 8-10
Jude might be a bit different than other kids but he loves reading books that have facts in them. Now, don’t get me wrong, he loves his silly Diary of a Wimpy Kid books but if he had a choice he would love to learn about history instead. Listed below are the books and series that Jude has been adding to his at home library.
Magic Tree House – Merlin Missions Series
Jude has read all of the Magic Tree House books so when we found out there was a whole other series called Merlin Missions we were so excited. He has read almost all of those as well. What is great about these books is that there is some historical information in each book. These are pretty quick reads for Jude but he really does enjoy them.
Geronimo Stilton Series
Oh Geronimo, he is so fun and colorful. Not only do the stories keep Jude entertained but the pages are so colorful. The font changes size, types and colors as you read along. A great way to keep kids into reading in my opinion. Jude has read a number of these books but with over 60 books we are so happy to know we will always be able to pick up another few Geronimo Stilton books when needed.
Who is? What Is? Where Is?
Have you seen these series? OH my gosh! They are absolutely a favorite in our house. Back in 2002 this company started with JUST 4 books. Now there are over 200 titles to choose from! Amazing. Another series that is not only geared towards young readers but will have them learning something as they are reading. Awesome!!
Upside Down Magic Series
Jude has only read the first book of this series but he really enjoyed it. It was so funny to hear him literally laughing out loud as he read this book. Makes me smile just thinking about it. There are 5 books in the series and you better believe we will picking up the rest of them for Jude to enjoy. Like I said, he loves historical fiction but this is just good old fiction that has him escaping reality for a bit. Growing that imagination!
I Survived…Book Series
Each book in the I Survived series tells a terrifying and thrilling story from history but through the eyes of a kid who lived to tell the tale. Jude has read all of these books, there are 15 in the series. These books take you through history and provide children with a glimpse into history from a kids perspective. I really love these books because it gives him a chance to learn about a piece of history at his age level. Example: Twin Towers/9/11 – this is a hard subject to talk about to an 8 year old. This was a great way to start a family discussion.
Ronald Dahl books
We all know Ronald Dahl right? Some childhood favorites like Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Jude has enjoyed a number of his books like James and The Giant Peach, Charlie and The Chocolate Factory and The Twitts. We have a few others on hand waiting for him to read as well. A fun fantasy author that really helps kids get into reading.
Diary Of A Wimpy Kid Series
I never thought Jude would be into these books because he was showing such an interest in the historical fiction but we picked one up at the book fair last year and he has been hooked ever since. These are pretty quick reads for him. But he really enjoys them. And I think they give him a little break from the seriousness of the other books he enjoys reading.
Geronimo Stilton – Fantasy Series
As I noted above, Jude loves reading about Geronimo Stilton but like a lot of the other books these became a book that he could read in just a day or two. We decided to pick up some of the Fantasy Series books from Geronimo Stilton because they were a little more advanced and longer. The author still does a great job with adding character to the fonts in the books in these as well. The one issue we found with these is that some of the fantasy was a bit scary to Jude – he is super sensitive. Once we had a good talk about what is real and fake he continued to enjoy them.
Well there is our current list for now. Like I said these are our favorites currently and while they might be geared more towards boys I guarantee Teagan will be enjoying some of these as she gets older.
I would love to hear what books your kids ages 8-10 enjoy reading. List them below or continue the conversation on Facebook.
