Last year Jude and Jeremy decided to start reading the Harry Potter series together and since then, we have been hearing all about Jude’s wish to have a Harry Potter birthday party for his 9th birthday! Jude is an avid reader and could probably read the series on his own but we know that the series has a lot of older messaging so that is why Jeremy has decided to read with him. It has been a great way for the two of them to spend some one on one time together too.
Jude Turns NINE!
So, now I am taxed with coming up with the perfect Harry Potter birthday party for our guy. Here is the catch – I am the odd one out, I have never read the books or seen the movies! I KNOW!! Crazy right? Well it is the truth! I started digging for some ideas and honestly, there are so many great ideas that I am worried I am going to have a hard time picking things to create!
Harry Potter Birthday Party Ideas
For some background. All of Jude’s birthday parties have been held in our backyard for a pool party. His birthday is in June so it works perfectly. It is always a day that we invite everyone – friends and family – because we can all hang out in the backyard. No worries about where everyone is going to sit inside. We spend the whole time outdoors. So, the theme is usually heavy in the decorations on the cake table, the food themes and the cake itself. Below are some ideas I would love to add to our Harry Potter birthday party!
Birthday Favors
Easy Harry Potter Chocolates by Tikkido
Dementor Attack Printables For Chocolate Bars by More Than Thursdays
Printable Harry Potter Bookmarks by The Quiet Grove
I know I want to give the kids something as they leave the party. Wondering if we can swing both a bookmark and a chocolate bar. I really think that the bookmarks are perfect for a Harry Potter birthday!
Party Decorations
Flying Keys Decor by Tikkdo
Candy Sorting Hats by Over Stuffed Life
I know I will do the keys and will make sure that the plates and napkins are Harry Potter colors or print. Simple touches that people will notice and love.
Dessert Ideas
Harry Potter Candy Skewers by Tikkido
Creative But Simple Cake by Christina Scucina
Chocolate Frogs by Kim and Carrie
Golden Snitch by My Poppet
Butter Beer Cupcakes by My Poppet
For dessert we will have a traditional cake that my “cake lady friend” will make for us but I love having additional snacks and treats around for the party. I know that I will do the Chocolate Frogs. So fun!
Food Ideas
Harry Potter Troll Popcorn by Tikkido
Rock Buns by Christina Scucina
Butter Beer Mug Cake by Savvy Mama Lifestyle
Butter Beer Drinks by All The Nourishing Things
Pumpkin Pastry by My Poppet
For food we like to have a lot of it! HA! When we say we invite everyone we do. So we never really know how many people to expect but we plan for 60-70 people usually. That being said, we have some staples like pizza, fruit and veggies and then build some themed food around those things. I know we have to find a way to incorporate the Butter Beer.

Man people are so creative! This is a hard party for me to visualize because I am not familiar with the books or movies so I need all the help I can get!
Party Activities
Harry Potter Scavenger Hunt by More Than Thursdays
DIY Harry Potter Wands by The Inspiration Edit
Polyjuice Potion Slime by More Than Thursdays
The main activity will be swimming but I do think it would be fun to create a Harry Potter Slime or do a Scavenger hunt in the backyard before the kids hit the pool.
