Disclosure: My family and I were invited to a pre-screening of POKÉMON Detective Pikachu in exchange for this post.
The world of Pokémon comes to life!
I remember when Jude first saw the preview for POKÉMON Detective Pikachu, we were in the movie theater and he could barely contain himself. We had to remind him that the release was months away and that we were at the theater to see a different movie. I have to be honest, when I saw the preview and saw that Ryan Reynolds was the lead I wondered if this was even a movie that we would let Jude and Teagan watch but once more information about the movie came out, we were pretty sure it was going to end up being a family night out kind of movie.
A few days ago we surprised the kids by taking them to a pre-screening of POKÉMON Detective Pikachu here in Denver. They were so excited. What made it even more fun was when we showed up to the theater and they were handing out Pikachu ears that glow!! So fun! The world of POKÉMON has been in our lives for about 3 years now. Jude’s excitement around these adorable little creatures has rubbed off on Teagan. So, you could say, that this “real world” view of POKÉMON was pretty perfect for them both!
Our Thoughts On POKÉMON Detective Pikachu
POKÉMON Detective Pikachu is rated PG, so let’s get the big question out of the way. Should you allow your kids to see POKÉMON Detective Pikachu? The short answer, in my opinion, is yes you should. Jude is 8 and Teagan is 6, while there were a few things that seemed a bit adult like in this movie I believe the both of the kids were just fine seeing this fun movie.
Disclosure – there are 3 curse words through out the movie (HELL and Damn) and one very close “oh Shhhhh”! There was also one bedroom innuendo that our kids didn’t even really pick up on. The line I am talking about “I’m actually pretty good at being alone.” Like I said above, yes there were some adult like themes but like a lot of other “kid movies” these themes are hidden enough for mom and dad to get a good laugh while it goes right over the kiddos heads!
Now, I know nothing about Pokemon so I was a little worried I would be lost in this movie but thankfully that was not the case. Sure I do not know all of the “inside Pokemon jokes” or all of their names but to enjoy this movie you do not need to know all of that information. I still laughed a lot and was on the edge of my seat a few times too.
While there were a few dark and suspenseful scenes for the most part we all found this movie to be fun and adventurous. Since the kids know all of the Pokemon and their characteristics even those scarier parts weren’t bad because they were aware of how those Pokemon act. In true Teagan form, she kept “awwwing” at how adorable all of the Pokemon were. I agree with her! AWWW!!!
