On Tuesday night we all got dressed up and headed downtown to the beautiful Denver Center for the Performing Arts to be apart of the opening night of Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. When I first told Jude and Teagan about this special experience they were both so excited. They absolutely love the Willy Wonka movies and Jude ate up the Roald Dahl Charlie and the Chocolate Factory book a few summers ago.
INTRODUCING ROALD DAHL’S CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY
Roald Dahl’s amazing tale is now Denver’s golden ticket. It’s the perfect recipe for a delectable treat: songs from the original film, including “Pure Imagination,” “The Candy Man,” and “I’ve Got a Golden Ticket,” alongside a toe-tapping and ear-tickling new score from the songwriters of Hairspray. Willy Wonka is opening his marvelous and mysterious chocolate factory…to a lucky few. That includes Charlie Bucket, whose bland life is about to burst with color and confection beyond his wildest dreams. He and four other golden ticket winners will embark on a mesmerizing joyride through a world of pure imagination. Now’s your chance to experience the wonders of Wonka like never before – get ready for Oompa-Loompas, incredible inventions, the great glass elevator and more, more, more at this everlasting showstopper.

Our Thoughts On ROALD DAHL’S CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY
Like I said before we were all super excited to attend this show and while we knew the story line well we all sat in our seats completely immersed with the actors on stage. Incredible is one word to explain this show. The costumes, the music, the acting, EVERYTHING was fantastic. The crowd was laughing and singing along the whole evening.
I found the updated “easter eggs” through out the performance really fun. And I must say…those Oompa-Loompas stole the show! When I sit here and think about the creative and out of this world rooms in the factory you read about in Roald Dahl’s book it was incredible to think of them doing this all on one stage but guess what…they did it!!
Should You Take The Kids?
The short answer…YES!!! Please take the kids. The age on this show is 6+, I did see younger kids in the audience and while I didn’t hear any kids get restless this was a longer show so I could see younger kids being done at intermission. If your child is not familiar with the original Charlie and the Chocolate Factory story it might be a good idea to read them the book before heading to the theater.
The music, set and costumes will keep the kids hooked! To be honest there were a few parts of the show that could be considered scary to kids when the “bad nut” kids end up disappearing in the factory. But again our kids know this story so they understood why those kids were falling into the chocolate waterfall and blowing up into a blueberry!
There is a 20 minute intermission. Make sure you grab a booster seat for your smaller kids before entering the theater.
