How is it that we are already on the down slope of 2019? June came and went quickly around here and while I did not get as much reading done as I had hoped, I did complete my 12th book for 2019!! Half way to my goal of 24 for the year! YAY!! I am shocked when I look at the amount of pages I have read so far for the year. I know for some it is small potatoes but for me it is quite an accomplishment!
For my 12th book I worked on a sponsored book club program for an upcoming release called Paranoid by Lisa Jackson. To be clear, I was not paid for this blog post but wanted to still share my review as I have been doing all year. I have shared with you before that I do occasionally enjoy a good psychological thriller and Paranoid is now being added to one of my top psychological thrillers on my list!
Paranoid by Lisa Jackson
There are people in Edgewater, Oregon, who think that twenty years ago, Rachel Gaston got away with murder.
Rachel still has no idea how a foolish teenaged game turned deadly—or who replaced her soft pellet air gun with a real weapon. When a figure leapt out at her from the darkness, she fired without thinking. Too late, she recognized her half-brother, Luke, and saw blood blooming around his chest.
Despite counseling, Rachel’s horrifying dreams about that night continue. Her anxiety contributed to her divorce from Detective Cade Ryder, though he blames himself too. But as Rachel’s high school reunion nears, she feels her imagination playing tricks, convincing her that objects in her house have moved. That there’s a hint of unfamiliar cologne in the air. That someone is tailing her car. Watching her home.
She’s right to be scared. And as connections surface between a new string of murders and Luke’s death, Rachel realizes there’s no escaping the past, and the truth may be darker than her worst fears …
My Review of Paranoid by Lisa Jackson
While Paranoid took me a while to get going on due to the amount of characters to sort out, once I was in it, I was hooked! Honestly, sometimes psychological thrillers are so easy to predict but I thought that Paranoid had a ton of great twists from beginning to end that kept me trying to find out “who done it”!
This entire town is filled with trauma and most everyone’s lives have been affected by this trauma. The title Paranoid fits the story line perfectly. The trust between characters are challenged due to this paranoia that fills the small town. I love a good romance so I also enjoyed to bits of romance and love added to the story line and absolutely appreciated that parenting blunders that we saw Rachel deal with.
I thought this book was really well done and that the character development was perfect. Now, my only issue was how the ending seemed to easily wrap up. Knowing what Rachel knows now, I imagine the trauma might get worse and harder to deal with and with the ending like this I do wonder if there will be a second to this thriller? No spoilers but man that ending gave me chills.
I know a lot of other influencers read Paranoid by Lisa Jackson for this book club campaign and I cannot wait to hear how they enjoyed this book. While it is not some chic lit fun book it is a book that you must add to your summer reading list. A perfect beach and vacation book for anyone who loves a little thrill, mystery and love!
I am super excited to move onto my 13th book for the year and cannot wait to share my next review. Make sure you check out my Reading Goal for 2019 and some of the books that are on my must read list this year!
