My Reformer Pilates History
Nearly six years ago I walked into my first Club Pilates class with my best friend. We were both super nervous about this class but after our 50 minute experience we were both hooked! Since that first class I have always said that Reformer Pilates is my favorite workout. After a few years of missing Pilates, I got the news that a new Club Pilates studio was opening just 5 minutes from my house! I was thrilled and once again, I jumped back in.

My BFF and me heading to our first Club Pilates Class in 2005!
I have been a member at Club Pilates Quebec Plaza since the day it opened. While COVID has put a damper on some of my attendance I am pleased and proud to say that I hit the 100 class mark and as of today I have attended 146 classes!!! WOOT!!! Before COVID hit was really on a great health journey – losing 70 pounds with the help of Pilates Well…that COVID 19 (pounds) snuck up and I have some work to do. But I am excited to share that Club Pilates Quebec Plaza is open and ready for us all to jump back into our health journeys!
Feeling Safe and Healthy At Club Pilates Quebec Plaza
We all need to do our part in keeping our friends, family and community safe and healthy during this unprecedented time. Club Pilates agrees but also knows that we all want to back to class moving our bodies!! From the moment I stepped back into class I felt safe and healthy and loved seeing the precautions that the club had taken in order to help stop the spread!
Reduced Studio Class Size – Our studios may reduce class sizes as needed to guarantee a minimum of 6 feet of personal distance between members during class.
Hands Off Corrections –For your safety, our instructors will teach using verbal cues only and will continue to provide modifications, progressions, adjustments, and corrections verbally during class as always.
‘In Good Health’ Verification – When booking in-studio classes, you will be required to affirm at time of booking, that you are in good health and have not been in contact with anyone experiencing symptoms of COVID-19 as detailed by the CDC. Additionally, we ask you to complete a waiver to be kept on file to acknowledge your participation in the studio is welcomed as long as you are healthy and observing our new studio policies and social distancing protocols.
Contactless Check-In – If you’re taking in-studio classes, our new mobile app check-in feature will allow you to check-in for a booked class utilizing your own personal device instead of the front desk kiosk.
Equipment Usage and Class Modifications – To ensure your safety, we may be limiting the use of some ancillary equipment and small props. If you have a reformer towel and a set of your own Reformer loops, you are welcome to bring them to class, but please leave all other personal equipment at home. To ensure the safety of all staff members and participants, outside equipment will not be allowed in the studio. Towels and water bottles are permitted.
Studio & Equipment Sanitization – All members will be instructed to clean the pieces of equipment used during class. Following class, staff will also sanitize all equipment and studio spaces according to our enhanced cleaning procedures. Length of classes or time between classes may be adjusted as needed to allow staff enough time to sanitize equipment and studio spaces.
Pilates For All Bodies
I shared this on my social media yesterday. The phrases “she has a swimmers body”, “He has a dad body”, “She has a runners body” – can be so detrimental to even the most confident people. When you classify someone’s body as a certain type, it limits what they feel they can achieve or do. The fact is, Pilates is for EVERY body. There is no ideal Pilates body because Pilates is all about moving and strengthening your body to help every body move better through life…not just in class. Every one of my classes is filled with different shapes, sizes, ages and abilities. This is why I love walking into my Club Pilates classes, the instructors are there to help me move better and use TODAYS body.
If you are new to Club Pilates you will begin at a Level 1 Club Pilates Reformer class. Your instructor really gauge your ability but most of all you will learn the techniques of Reformer Pilates. One of the greatest things about Club Pilates is that the instructors want the best for you. They do not want you in pain or out of your fitness level, work with them and they will work with you. I have also found that depending on how my body is feeling I can simply ask for a modified step if need be. This is exactly how working out should feel like!

What To Expect At Club Pilates
So now that I have you excited about all of the amazing classes available at Club Pilates Quebec Plaza, you might be wondering what to expect when you walk into class.
YOU WILL WORK EVERY MUSCLE – Seriously, even those muscles you forgot you had. Pilates is a great way to build strength and fitness. Pilates is specifically defined as exercise for the core or abdominal muscles, it is important to know that the core includes the entire trunk, which is the abdominals, the hips, the inner and outer thighs, and the back. So expect a workout that works your entire body.
WEAR TIGHT BUT COMFORTABLE CLOTHING – Even if you typically prefer loose-fitting workout wear, you’re going to want to wear body-hugging options for Reformer Pilates classes. With tighter clothing the instructor can see your movements better and your clothes won’t get caught in springs or other equipment. Most important thing to think about is being able to have full range of movement while on the reformer. It is important to have grip socks while doing Reformer Pilates. These are my favorite. The grips provide traction and prevent your feet from slipping on the machine. This is especially once you start to sweat. The socks also allow you to focus on activating the proper muscles and not crunching your toes to stay in place on the machine.
BREATHING IS KEY – Activating your core is one of the first things you learn when starting Pilates. In addition to this core focus, it is really important that you take time to breath. Yes, during the class you will feel like you are thinking about so much because of the positions you are working on but breathing properly is key. There is a specific breathing technique pattern designed to aid the movements and muscle activations for each exercise. Your instructor will help you with your breathing.
YOU WILL BE SORE THE NEXT DAY – While you may not be crushing high-intensity exercises at Reformer Pilates the mostly bodyweight routines that Pilates classes offer can be pretty intense. Dedicating your entire focus to even the smallest movements means that you’ll work the muscles that each exercise intends. And that means you can be dealing with muscle soreness after your workout. While next-day soreness may be at a whole new level after your first week, your body will get more used to the movements with time. Being sore the next day just means you’re challenging your muscles in new ways or working muscle groups that don’t usually get much attention.
LISTEN – Listen to your body and listen to your instructor. If something hurts, tell your instructor. When you bring the reformer machine into the mix, there’s a lot of moving parts especially if you’re a beginner. It’s easy to get lost trying to change resistance, properly place your hands and feet on the platform or using the handles attached to the reformer. Simply asking your instructor to repeat the instruction or look around at your classmates for confirmation.
MODIFY IF NEEDED – When walking into your Club Pilates class make sure you introduce yourself as a newbie. Even if you are in the best of shape you might need some modifications as you get used to this work out. A good instructor should give you modifications so that you can perform each movement with good form. A good form helps you maximize your work out and keeps your body safe and healthy.
HAVE FUN! – Most importantly, HAVE FUN! If you have a good instructor you will find that your 50 minute class will go by in a flash and you will even crack a smile or laugh a bit when you are challenged. It is okay to take breaks and usually when I do, I laugh or smile at this amazing challenge I put myself in! It is a good feeling.
