Potty training does not stop when the diapers are done, well at least that is how it has been in our experience with our kids. Sure, the diapers are not on the shopping list anymore but the constant potty talk is continuing. One of the things that people seem to forget to tell parents is that training your child to use the toilet is the easy task but wiping is the real challenge! After a few messy months with our oldest we decided to incorporate Cottonelle® Fresh Care* Flushable Cleansing Cloths in our bathroom must haves for the kids and for the adults!
It is a subject that isn’t a fun one but it is parenting reality to the max. Here are a few tips on teaching your child to wipe properly.
Tips On How to Teach Kids To Wipe
Inform your child – be honest with them. Tell them why it is important to get clean after using the restroom.
Show and Tell – NO I do not mean you have to “live” show them but demonstrate the action that they have to do themselves. Sounds silly but it really is a technique that takes some practice and skill. Remember that they are just learning this whole action.
Cleansing Cloths – Head to Sam’s Club to pick up Cottonelle® Fresh Care* Flushable Cleansing Cloths. These are the perfect cloths to use when training to wipe, great way to get clean! Plus they are Flushable, Sewer and septic-safe and break up after flushing.
Praise – just like you got excited for that first pee in the potty, it is time to get excited for that clean bum!! Toddlers and young children need our praise and encouragement!
Wash hands – when teaching it is important that we give reminders of general bathroom routines. Washing hands is so important for everyone but especially those toddlers that are learning how to wipe.
Space for kids – make the bathroom a welcoming space for your children. This will help with the anxiety of learning the wiping steps!
We have not mastered these tips yet with either of our kids but we are working on it. Honestly, this was something I never really thought of when we started potty training but now that Jude is older we are finding those “dirty” undies more often which has made it clear that using the Cottonelle® Fresh Care* Flushable Cleansing Cloths is a must.
We decided to make a special caddy just for Jude and Teagan in our bathroom that have their cleansing cloths and some reading material. This is a super easy accessory to add to your bathroom to encourage healthier bathroom habits.

I would love for you to share your tips on how to teach children to wipe properly!

I like that these wipes are flushable. I remember seeing a sign on the side of a plumber's van a while back saying protect your pipes, don't flush the wipes. I would like to try them.
These sound great for my kids! Sometimes they need that extra wipe and the moisture would help!
What a cute idea. My nieces would love this.
That is such a cute idea for kids. Especially if potty training as sometimes they sit there for awhile.
I used to buy these when the kids were babies. I need to start again, they don't use toliet paper like they should….
Boy do I need this! My son has been potty-trained since the summer, but we still have to wipe. I can't remember when it changed for my daughter, but I'm anxious for it.
Cottonelle wipes are great and useful for the entire family. Teaching children early about proper hygiene is a must.
This is such a great idea for the kids! I love Cottonelle wipes and always keep them on hand!
This makes me giggle because it brings back memories from when our sob was little. That basket idea is really cute.
How cool to have a kid caddy. And the wipes are a great idea to keep on hand.
That is a great idea. Wipes are the best…we still use them on our grandson and he is 4!!
I love this caddy idea! My kids are always dropping their wipes beside the toilet, then they can't reach. This is perfect.
I am laughing because children really do have to be taught to wipe. It is funny what they end up doing when they are not properly taught.
Cottonelle wipes are great for the whole family! We use them all the time! Teaching children early about proper hygiene is so important!
What a great idea for a caddy to hold all the necessities for the kiddos. We use these cloths at our house as well and we love them! [client]
Ya gotta love that it has usefulness outside the bathroom. I appreciate that a lot.
I'm actually still teaching my 4yr old how to wipe and being that she's a girl, we've been focusing on the front to back and not back to front.
I love the caddy idea! We have these wipes in all of our bathrooms! My boys tend to make such big messes! Great tip!
We use these with the kids and they really help keep life clean.
