Recently, one of my good friends hosting an online Usborne Book party.  When I first got the invite I wasn’t sure what Usborne was but as I started my “shopping trip” I was hooked.  Books, books and more books!  Both Jude and Teagan love books so I never hesitate when I have the opportunity to find new books for the two of them.

During my “shopping trip” I was pretty focused on finding a good series for Jude to get into.  He is six years old and in Kindergarten and reading all on his own now.  His teacher is allowing him to work on harder reading and writing work at school which has led to him doing over 10 book reports so far this school year.  Needless to say, this boy loves to read and I want to make sure we continue to challenge him in this part of his education.

Hey Jack! by Sally Rippin

I stumbled on this great series all about Jack by Sally Rippin, a well known young readers author who also writes about Jacks best friend, Billie B. Brown.  I was drawn to the fact that there were a number of books in the series and that Jack seems to experience some great adventures.  Perfect for Jude.
So far Jude has enjoyed “The Winning Goal” and “The Circus Lesson”.  He feels so big when he gets to read these chapter books, especially when he uses a book mark to remember his spot overnight.  Each of these books have 3 chapters which is plenty for Jude’s reading level and age.   Jude has read these in 2 sittings!  My heart is so happy that he is reading so well!
Jack is a down to earth little boy that has an imagination that matches Jude’s – wild and fun!  The books are perfect for this new reader of ours, the words are appropriate yet challenging at times.  The picture breaks that pop up through out the book allow for Jude to have a little break and look at the illustrations.
I believe that these books are great for reading levels in Kindergarten and 1st grade.  I am looking forward to adding more of the Hey Jack books to Jude’s library and know that when Teagan is at this level we will be picking up some of the Billie B. Brown books for her.  I appreciate Sally Rippin for coming up with a series of books that challenge this level but also make them feel confident and ready to jump into those bigger chapter books in a few years.

I have already shown him the other titles and he is feeling the book itch!  He needs more Jack!!   I give this series 5 stars!!  A must buy for every new reader who wants a little more confidence when growing into the reading world.

Please share any new reader books series you and your kids enjoy below in the comments  We are always looking for new books to enjoy!

It is so exciting when the children start school and begin to learn to read on their own. I love seeing my grandchildren get involved in book series like this. It just warms my heart to see children enjoy reading!

I can see my Kindergartner looking this "Hey Jack" book series. It's really the best seeing the early readers gain confidence in their reading. I love the initial first step of looking at pictures in the books and making up stories of what the author wrote. Thanks for sharing this.

We have a reading log for my pre-kindergartener and this would be a great series to add to his list! He is starting to piece together words to create sentences as he reads, so I think this would be a great way to contrinue reading together.
