Around Christmas time Jude became mildly obsessed with Pokemon and it was decided that his 7th birthday MUST be a Pokemon themed party! While he is so excited about this, I was lost. I did not know anything about Pokemon so I really had to do my research on how to throw the perfect party for this special guy!
Last weekend was his birthday as well as his big party with friends and family. Once again we did a backyard swimming party, like we have done for all of his parties but this year, we were worried because Colorado tossed us a crazy weather weekend! About a week before the party we saw it was going to be in the 60’s…yes in the 60s in JUNE!! Ugh. Thankfully, in true Colorado fashion we ended up with a chilly but perfect pool party day!
Per Jude’s request we got the big pool out even thought it was only 70 degrees when his party started. Kids do not seem to care about the cold water as long as the sun was shining they were all in the pool! We had to have a few water balloon fights too. Jeremy might enjoy this more than the kids.
We were so happy that the weather turned for us. The kids had a great time. I love birthday parties like this. All the parents sit around chatting while the kids run, scream, play and get drenched. It is so much fun to hear the squeals and laughing in our backyard.
Once again we got all of our party supplies from Oriental Trading Company. Lucky for us they have a whole Pokemon themed party on their website! Having those options made it really easy to plan and prepare for Jude’s party.
For our table setting we went with a Pokemon themed tablecloth, red, yellow and blue cake napkins and forks, as well as some Pokemon themed dinner plates and napkins. When I showed Jude the party items he was so excited!!
Once I ordered all of the supplies I had to start thinking about what food to serve. Like I said before, I am not a Pokemon expert at all so this took some research but I am so happy with how our food turned out for the party!
I created Pokemon Table Tents to label each one of our food items.
Here was our Pokemon Party Menu:
- Pikachu Pizza
- Pidgey Popcorn
- Pokeball Fruit
- Jigglypuff Gummies
- Squirtle Snacks
- Charmander Cheetos
- Venusaur Veggies
- Lapras Water (Jell-o)
Everything was a hit!! Plus this menu was super easy for part prep too!
For the 7th year in a row my childhood friend, who Jude lovingly calls “Cake Lady Friend”, created a very special cake for Jude. Her artist talent is pretty amazing and the cake always tastes SO good. This year, Jude went for a chocolate cake. Yummy!!
Jude requested that Pikachu, Squirtle and Charmander be on his cake. She delivered. These little characters were so adorable!! They looked identical to the characters on the cards. LOVE!!
For our party decorations I decided to put up the Jumbo Pokemon Happy Birthday banner from Oriental Trading Company. Disclosure – when they say JUMBO they mean it!! This banner covered our whole kitchen wall! It was perfect. I totally forgot to take a picture of the banner. Busy day.
In addition to the Pokemon themed plates, tablecloth, napkins and banner I decided to get a little creative with some paper lanterns.
How to Make Pokemon Pokeball Paper Lanterns:
Materials:
White Paper Lanterns
Red Spray Paint
Black Tape
Directions:
1. Build lanterns as directed.
2. Hold lantern out in front of you and carefully spray one side of the lantern red. We did this outside to avoid any mess.
3. Let spray paint dry completely.
4. Wrap black tap around the middle of the lantern between the white and the red.
5. Hang lanterns from ceiling.
We had a lot of complements on our Pokeballs and they really brought a little extra fun to our food and cake table!
For goodie bags I bought some Pokemon cards in bulk and created a cute little Thank You card for the tag. I included some suckers as well. The kids were so excited to get some Pokemon cards!!

Love this theme and that cake!! Your cake lady friend did an awesome job.
And those food name tags are awesome!!
What a super cute idea for a party. What kid doesn't love Pokemon? My twin granddaughters' birthday just passed and they had a Barbie themed party. I'm sure they'd love to have a Pokemon themed party next year.
This is such a fun party idea. I think it would be fun for even an adult I know that is obsessed with this game! My mom would love to have this theme for her party because she lives and breathes this game. What a fun time!
Oh my goodness…my kiddo would be in heaven! He loves all things Pokemon. I really love all of your snack foods…so fun! And those Pokeballs can't be beat. You have so many fantastic details!
I remember when my son was into Pokemon. Goodness he is 23 now so that was so long ago and it is still popular. The cake is gorgeous and you did a wonderful job at capturing the theme of the party. I miss the days of my kiddos being younger and having parties like this.
We recently did a pokemon party too! It was a ton of fun, but also a ton of work! My son had a huge wish list and we made most of the decorations ourselves. Wish I had had your great printables! I love your paper lanterns too. Looks like a great birthday!!
While my son isn't into Pokemon, I am taking in all of your party inspiration to plan his next birthday party. (He's more of a Paw Patrol and trains kinda kid.) I do love Oriental Trading Company's party favors but always forget about them.
This brings back such great memories. When my son was Jude's age he was also into Pokemon. We had the cards, tee shirts, the whole thing. You're such a cool mom to have sought out such wonderful party supplies. I love the lanterns and the cake is absolutely adorable. Happy Birthday to him! x
You did such a great job of decorating here. It looks like such a lot of fun and that the kids had an amazing time. I have to admit that I am highly impressed with the decorations for the cake. I can never get mine to turn out that amazing. I love the creative titles you gave to the food as well.
It was the perfect party! You did an amazing job girl and my kids are still talking about the cake and the gift bags! They were simple and perfect! Thank you as always for having us
This is a fantastic post.
This party looks AWESOME. It looks as if your son had an amazing time! Love how you got creative with the lanterns. The themed food was perfect and 90's Me would've totally been envious
