Disclosure: Denver Center for the Performing Arts provided us with media tickets in exchange for our honest review, no other compensation has been provided. All opinions are my own.

Last weekend my mom and I headed to the Denver Center for Performing Arts to be apart of opening night of the World Premiere production of Zoey’s Perfect Wedding. When I first read about this upcoming production I instantly knew this would be the perfect play to enjoy with my mom.  And I was right, we both really enjoyed this show and I know there are a lot of you out there that MUST take advantage of the many available showtimes and take some time for yourself at the theater for some laughs and reflection.

About Zoey’s Perfect Wedding:

The blushing bride. The touching toast. The celebration of true love. These are the dreams of Zoey’s big day…and the opposite of what it’s turning out to be. Disaster after disaster follow her down the aisle, from brutally honest boozy speeches to a totally incompetent wedding planner. Even worse, her friends are too preoccupied with their own relationship woes to help with the wreckage around them. Like a car crash you can’t look away from, watch in awe as this wildly funny fiasco destroys her expectations with the realities of commitment, fidelity and growing up.

Why is Zoey’s NOT So Perfect Wedding Perfect?

1.  Zoey’s Perfect Wedding was hilarious, I found myself laughing from the time we were seated to the very end of the show.  Yes, it was mildly inappropriate at times but frankly, it was real.  I could have totally put my own friends and family in the place of these actors and the “situation” would have been identical.  After a busy week of traveling and work it was a great way to enjoy a night out with my mom. Laughter is medicine.
2.  Reminders about why we are married…or not married.  Obviously, this is about a wedding so we get to see the reception go nuts.  Through it all Zoey is questioning why she is having the wedding she is having.  So, the question is – why do we worry about making everyone else happy on our wedding day?

3.  The perfect theater for a setting like this.  Zoey’s Perfect Wedding is in the newly redesigned Space Theater at the Denver Center for Performing Arts and wow.  Not only is is a beautiful space but it was absolutely perfect for this play.  This is an “in-the-round” theater which has you in the mix of it all.  This specific play is centered around table 27 at the reception so the table was placed on a slowly rotating turntable, this allowed us to see all everyone come and go from the table.  There was literally no bad seat in the theater.
4.  Zoey’s Perfect Wedding brings up hard issues that affect marriages and friendships. Friendships change as you get older.  We have all wondered why that “best friend” doesn’t call us her best friend anymore but the fact is, things change – people change!  There was a special moment in the play that really made me think about this fact.  I actually felt like I was in this scene with Zoey when it was happening.

5.  Queue the tears.  I told you it was a hilarious play but there were also some heart to heart moments that had me crying. Weddings bring out the worst and the best in people. Remember that your expectations aren’t always met but your meant to be will be found.
6.  DJ for the play.  When you go to see Zoey’s Perfect Wedding be prepared for a fun little environment with the other guests and the in house DJ!  Oh and some of the songs that are played are just plain perfect for a little nostalgic feeling.

7.  Marriage is farting in bed.  Yup – perfect!  I may have laughed more than others when that line was announced because #TRUTH!

Once again, I am reminded about lucky we are to live in a city that loves the arts as much as we do. The Denver Center for the Performing Arts is quickly becoming my favorite place to enjoy my nights out with or with out my kids.

We very rarely go to shows, but we may have to make it a point to go see this one. It sounds like a lot of fun! I'll have to check and see if it's coming to our area some time soon.
