With a big change in our schooling choices we are quickly learning the benefits of music education. Music education is a true cornerstone to academic, social, and cultural success. I am excited to share some great information and opportunities that Guitar Center offers for all ages.
Learning The Benefits Of Music Education
This school year we ventured into a new kind of school for the kids. This school is an Arts Magnet school, meaning it is still a public school but it focuses on all of the arts, including music. We are three months into the school year and I am already seeing the major benefits of music education for kids. Most evenings when we ask the kids about school they talk about a new song, instrument or musical artist they have learned about that day. What a fantastic way to enjoy dinner with the family, and honestly I have learned a lot from them explaining their experiences in their music classes.
So the question is…what are the benefits of music education?
When diving into any type of music lessons your child will grow into his art. This can be from voice lessons, piano lessons or even drumming lessons but the fact is, once a child is given the means they will be able to express their feelings through their art. We are all drawn to different things, music gives us a chance to express those feelings. Children have to learn self-expression but having music education is a great way to teach this attribute.
Increased Confidence and Self-Esteem
No matter your age, when a person has the opportunity to learn something new, confidence begins to grow! When a person has more confidence you will also see that Self-Esteem turn positive. Achieving a new opportunity like playing the piano will help a young person see that they can achieve a new task.
All cultures have their own style of music that helps us learn more about their traditions. This includes the different instruments and forms of dance. Learning about these different cultures can help young people be more aware and accepting of the growing diversity in our world. This something we have seen in our kids this year. They are learning lyrics, instruments and dances from different countries and it is fascinating to hear them talk about their discoveries.
Just like playing football, music takes practice and dedication. This self-discipline is a huge life skill that will stick with the child through adulthood. Learning how to read music and play a specific instrument is not something that is usually just sitting in a child’s brain. Not everyone is an immediate ROCKSTAR when picking up a guitar. This means, practice, practice, practice and for a child who might be used to immediate gratification this is where the art of self-discipline comes into play.
Music performance teaches children to face fear and to take risks. Some anxiety and nervousness is a good thing, and something that all people will face in life. Dealing with it early and often makes it less of a problem later. In addition to this, finding a hobby like playing guitar or singing gives young people the opportunity escape the stressful factors of life. Which can then become an outlet of self-expression.
Academic Improvement and Retention
Research has shown that children who were exposed to music from a young age have more academic success as they grow older. This includes a higher IQ, better retention of knowledge, higher grades and more success on standardized tests. It is clear, music does the brain GOOD!
Even though our kids are getting a great start at their school in terms of music lessons we have also looking into piano lessons and guitar lessons for them at our local Guitar Center. Look, I missed the boat on learning music as a child so this is an area that I cannot help my kids in which means heading to the well-known and well-respected Guitar Center is exactly what we will be doing.
