What is Speculaas Spice?

Speculaas Spice Mix is often used in the Dutch cuisine during fall and winter. As soon as the weather starts to turn cold all kind of delicious recipes with Speculaas spices start popping up. Baked goods containing Speculaas Spices are served on Saint Nicholas Day, like the Pepernoten Dutch Holiday Cookies.

Learn How Make Your Own Speculaas Spice

While it sounds pretty fancy, this spice is really easy to make on your own and you can totally make enough to keep on hand.

Ingredients:

6 tsp ground cinnamon
2 tsp ground mace
1 tsp ground cloves
1/2 tsp ground nutmeg
1/2 tsp ground cardamom
1/2 tsp ground ginger
1/2 tsp ground white pepper
1 tsp ground aniseed (optional)

Directions:

1. In a small bowl combine all of the spices and combine well.

2. You can put this mixture into a glass jar with a lid and keep on hand for great  Speculaas bakes during the holiday season.

So easy right?!  And I love this flavor.  Perfect for the holiday season.

I’ve never used speculaas, but I’ve heard about it. I think I need to try it. It seems to have all those holiday flavors!
