How I Am Taking Control of My Health
This time of the year I find myself talking a lot about goals. For 2019 I have one major goal and that is ME. Every part of me! This includes my reading goal, my physical health goal and also my general health. I am so bad about making my own health appointments but I am a pro with everyone else in my family. Recently, I was introduced to a company called Nurx. Nurx is healthcare company that provides women all over the US access to convenient, affordable and judgement-free healthcare. Nurx is perfect for a busy woman like me who often forgets to take care of their own health.
Cervical Health Awareness Month
Before we dive into how Nurx is helping me take control of my health this year I want make sure we are all aware that January is Cervical Health Awareness Month! I honestly had no idea that this was cervical health awareness month but that shouldn’t be surprising. Cervical health is not something that is talked about a lot but frankly, we need to keep the conversation going.
Did you know that HPV causes nearly 34,000 new cervical cancer diagnoses every year? HPV, or Human Papillomavirus, is the most commonly transmitted STI; nearly 80 million Americans are currently infected with HPV and 14 million people are newly infected each year. And in all of this, cervical cancer is one of the most preventable types of cancer. This is not just a woman’s health issue either. Most men and women are infected with HPV at some point in their lives, while most are unaware they have the virus.
All of these HPV and Cervical Cancer statistics are news to me and that is a clear reason why we need to talk about these health issues.
Nurx Home HPV Screening Test
Nurx just introduced a Home HPV Screening Test. With just one swab taken in the privacy and convenience of your own home, you will get better insight into your risk for cervical cancer and make better decisions about your health. As stated before cervical cancer is one of the most preventable types of cancer which gives us even more of a reason to use this screening kit. This kit will check for 14 strains of HPV that have a higher risk of leading to cervical cancer. So your results will not tell you that you have cancer but it will share if you are at risk.
Look I will be the first person to admit that I have not gotten my Pap Smears as often as I should. The Home HPV Screening Test is a great option for women 30 and over who are not getting a pap smear as often as they should. According to recently updated guidelines, an HPV test is an appropriate replacement for the pap smear.
For those without insurance, Nurx offers the kit for only $69, shipping and processing included and if you have health insurance, in most cases the cost of the kit is covered. You will only need to pay $15 for shipping and processing. A very affordable option for those with or without insurance.
What Is Included In The Home HPV Screening Test?

Simple enough right? To be honest, when I first downloaded the Nurx app I was a bit nervous about this whole process but it was very easy, comfortable and private. I have major anxiety issues when it comes to visiting my “lady” doctor and doing this home HPV screening test was a lot easier and carefree. Another piece of my ME 2019 goal in the books!

This is a great post for women. I would have said married women do not ave to worry, but one never knows… it certainly can not hur and would give peace of mind. I know HPV has went through the roof.
This is something that everyone should do. My Mother had cervical cancer, she had a hysterectomy but they failed to do a biopsy. She later had a stroke. The hospital assumed they had checked for cancer and after trying to diagnose the problem, found out she had cancer. They said cancer caused her stroke. But it was too late and she died after being in the hospital for 6 months unable to talk. She suffered so much, I wish they had had this then. She was having pain before and after the surgery and went to several doctors who said it was just pain from the hysterectomy. Please, everyone, take this test. Finally there is something available that could give you advance notice. I’m going to do it and have my Daughter do it.
