We all want to make spending time together as a family a priority, but what is everyone going to do together? A family movie night is a great way to enjoy some snacks and time together as a family, but it doesn’t leave room for a whole lot of interaction between the family. So what are some screen free activities that the family can do together that everyone will enjoy?
Screen Free Activities for Family Night
Game Night
Board games, and card games are often overlooked in today’s technological world, but they are a lot of fun. You can find games that are age appropriate for all of the members of your family. If you don’t happen to have any board or card games at home, you should look into getting some, but you can also take a game night to the next level by creating your own games. Give your kids some poster board and markers, throw in some dice and game pieces to move around the board and see what they come up with.
Water Fight
Summer isn’t over just yet, so why not head out to the backyard for a good old fashioned water fight? Water guns, water balloons, sponges, and a hose are all you need for an hour or two of fun in the backyard and you will stay cool too. If your kids are a little bit older you can try adding some cheap foam shaving cream to the mix for a shaving cream war. Just make sure you have some towels on hand, and that you don’t get it in anyone’s eyes.
Have a Theme Night
Pick a theme, or take turns picking them as a family, and then dress up, play games, and have snacks centered around your theme. If your children are a little bit older you choose a place as your theme like Paris, or Thailand, and enjoy foods that you might find there. If your kids are younger something like knights and princesses may be more age appropriate.
Have a Campfire
Head on out to the backyard and have a campfire under the stars. Cook a hot dog, make s’mores and tell each other spooky stories. If you don’t have the space for a bonfire or a fire pit, your backyard charcoal grill will do just fine.
Put on a Play
Put on a play, or act out scenes from a favorite book or movie. Your kids will have a blast creating costumes and writing out a script for the family to act out. Make sure that you record it for a fun family memory.
Cook a Meal Together
This one will take a little advance preparation, but choose a meal that everyone will enjoy, and spend some time in the kitchen preparing it together. Your kids will learn some valuable cooking skills, you can all share some laughs in the kitchen, and then you can sit down and share a meal together.
Karaoke Night
Does your family love music? If so, how about a karaoke night at home? If you have a karaoke machine, great, but if not you don’t have to have any extra equipment or anything. There are plenty of karaoke tracks available on YouTube that you can use for free. Okay, so technically this one is not quite screen free, you need a TV screen for the words, but it is still music and a night of family fun.
There you have it, some fun, family friendly activities that don’t revolve around a screen that you can try on your next family night.
