And we are back! Ready for a new year of new book reviews! My 2021 reading goal is 24 books read in 2021…same as last year. That is 2 books a month and with a new goal of reading at least 50 pages in a book a day, I have high hopes for busting this goal!! I am excited to tell you all that I am currently finishing up my 3rd book already!! WOOT!!
So, it is time to share what my first book read in 2021 was. I picked up The Friends We Keep by Susan Mallery for my first book. This is the 2nd book in The Girls of Mischief Bay series. I really enjoyed the first book in this series last year, so I figured it was a great place to kick off 2021! This series all about friendship, love, and life. I enjoy a good series so I was really excited that I found this one. Susan Mallery is a great author and I am happy that I picked up another one of her books!
Book 1 Read In 2021
The Friends We Keep (#2) by Susan Mallery
In this insightful and compelling story from book club favorite Susan Mallery, three close friends test the boundaries of how much a woman can give before she has nothing left.
After five years as a stay-at-home mom, Gabby Schaefer can’t wait to return to work. Oh, to use the bathroom in peace! No twins clamoring at the door, no husband barging in, no stepdaughter throwing a tantrum. But when her plans are derailed by some shocking news and her husband’s crushing expectations, Gabby must fight for the right to have a life of her own.
Getting pregnant is easy for Hayley Batchelor. Staying pregnant is the hard part. Her husband is worried about the expensive fertility treatments and frantic about the threat to her health. But to Hayley, a woman who was born to be a mom should risk everything to fulfill her destiny—no matter how high the cost.
Nicole Lord is still shell-shocked by a divorce that wasn’t as painful as it should’ve been. Other than the son they share, her ex-husband left barely a ripple in her life. A great new guy tempts her to believe maybe the second time’s the charm…but how can she trust herself to recognize true love?
As their bonds of friendship deepen against the beautiful backdrop of Mischief Bay, Gabby, Hayley and Nicole will rely on good food, good wine and especially each other to navigate life’s toughest changes.
My Review of The Friends We Keep
Just like the first book in The Girls of Mischief Bay series I really enjoyed The Friends We Keep. To be honest, every character that Susan Mallery introduces us to in this series I can relate to in one way or another. Just like the first book I would classify The Friends We Keep as a chic lit book but with some heavy and real topics.
For this book we did have some glimpses of the characters from the first book but we were also introduced to some new ones as well. Once again, all of these ladies find themselves in changing and crazy times in their lives. Hey…that is life! Susan Mallery does such a great job with this in her books – real life, real issues. Divorce, infertility, teenage pregnancy; just to name a few. Helps me get sucked into the book and feel all the feels!
I would recommend this book and the whole series to anyone that loves a good fiction story about friendship and a bit of love. This is a good mix of chic lit, contemporary and romance writing. I cannot wait to read book #3 in The Girls of Mischief Bay series. The way that The Friends We Keep ended I am super excited to get an update on these ladies and maybe be introduced to more women in Mischief Bay!
Book 1 in the books!! Off to a super start for 2021! While I am really excited to continue with the Mischief Bay series I jumped into a different book for book 2 for 2021. Cannot wait to share that review with you soon! I am always looking for new books to add to my reading list so please share some books you have really enjoyed recently. Make sure you check out my 2021 Reading List and Goal too. Maybe you can add some of my books to your list this year!
