2021 is the year for smashing goals – amiright?! Last week I told you that while I was sharing my 2nd book read for the year, I was actually reading my 5th! So, you better be prepared for some weekly (fingers crossed that reading mojo continues) book reviews! Today I am sharing my 3rd book read in 2021 and it is a different type of book than what I usually read but after seeing amazing reviews and it being suggested to me I decided to add it to my birthday wish list.
Book 3 for 2021 is Untamed by Glennon Doyle. I am sure you have seen this beautiful book on social media – this cover is almost as great as this book was. This is my first time reading Glennon Doyle but I have a feeling it won’t be my last time. Glennon Doyle has certainly made a name for herself and I am in love with her spirit and drive.
Book 3 Read In 2021
Untamed by Glennon Doyle
This is how you find yourself.
There is a voice of longing inside each woman. We strive so mightily to be good: good partners, daughters, mothers, employees, and friends. We hope all this striving will make us feel alive. Instead, it leaves us feeling weary, stuck, overwhelmed, and underwhelmed. We look at our lives and wonder: Wasn’t it all supposed to be more beautiful than this? We quickly silence that question, telling ourselves to be grateful, hiding our discontent—even from ourselves.
For many years, Glennon Doyle denied her own discontent. Then, while speaking at a conference, she looked at a woman across the room and fell instantly in love. Three words flooded her mind: There She Is. At first, Glennon assumed these words came to her from on high. But she soon realized they had come to her from within. This was her own voice—the one she had buried beneath decades of numbing addictions, cultural conditioning, and institutional allegiances. This was the voice of the girl she had been before the world told her who to be. Glennon decided to quit abandoning herself and to instead abandon the world’s expectations of her. She quit being good so she could be free. She quit pleasing and started living.
Soulful and uproarious, forceful and tender, Untamed is both an intimate memoir and a galvanizing wake-up call. It is the story of how one woman learned that a responsible mother is not one who slowly dies for her children, but one who shows them how to fully live. It is the story of navigating divorce, forming a new blended family, and discovering that the brokenness or wholeness of a family depends not on its structure but on each member’s ability to bring her full self to the table. And it is the story of how each of us can begin to trust ourselves enough to set boundaries, make peace with our bodies, honor our anger and heartbreak, and unleash our truest, wildest instincts so that we become women who can finally look at ourselves and say: There She Is.
My Review Of Untamed
Untamed shows us how to be brave. As Glennon insists: The braver we are, the luckier we get.
I wasn’t sure what to expect when I started reading this book but once I started it, I had a hard time putting it down. Remember my goal for this year is to read at least 50 pages a day…that was not an issue while reading this book. Glennon’s experiences are so different and yet SO similar to mine that she really spoke to my heart. She gave me that permission to feel all my feelings about my current life situation, so needed.
Glennon shared her story, her journey and the struggles. But through all of that, she gave me (the reader) empowerment to finding and being true to myself. As I read this book, my feelings were all over the place but with every word I could tell that my feelings were validated. Such an amazing feeling – validation! Not only did Glennon empower me to be brave but I took notes on her simple yet so important messages about parenting in this society and world we are currently in. I want to make sure I am not hindering my children’s growth and bravery as they grow.
If you are a fan of Brene Brown or Elizabeth Gilbert you will relate to Glennon Doyle. You will eat this book up and be sad when it is over. The strength that Glennon Doyle shows even through her most vulnerable moments has me wanting to have coffee with her. So, if you need a little motivation, self-love encouragement or inspiration to make this a great moment in your life – pick up Untamed! Lean in.
