TEN!! Double digits! I have read 10 books in 2021 and while that might not seem like a lot to some, it is great progress for me. I am really excited to share this book with you because there is a fun story to it as well. I picked up my 10th book while on a cabin getaway to the Black Hills with friends last month. We went to Deadwood, South Dakota and memories were made but I also happened to stumble across Ann Charles books in a yummy chocolate shop just outside of Deadwood called Chubby Chipmunk. We picked up some truffles and I picked up book 1 of her series that takes place in Deadwood – Nearly Departed In Deadwood.
Book 10 Read In 2021
Nearly Departed in Deadwood (Deadwood #1) by Ann Charles
Little girls are vanishing from Deadwood, South Dakota. Fearing her daughter might be next, single mom, Violet Parker, is desperate to find the monster behind the abductions.
With her savings dwindling and just three weeks left to sell her first house or lose her Realtor job, Violet is ecstatic when a handsome jeweler hires her to sell his century-old, Victorian masterpiece until she sees the dilapidated dwelling.
Now, if she could just convince her only buyer to stop rejecting vintage homes as if they’re haunted. Short on time and long on worry, she refuses to give up her dream of a fresh start in Deadwood.
But with a malicious coworker trying to get her fired, a secret admirer sending her creepy messages, and a sexy stranger hiding skeletons in his closet, will Violet end up as one of Deadwood’s dearly departed?
My Review Of Nearly Departed In Deadwood
I would have never picked up this book had it not been in that candy shop while I was visiting Deadwood, South Dakota. This book really did have it all – romance, humor, mystery and thrill. All of the things I love to read! While this mystery was pretty easy to solve, it kept me reading and I cannot wait to order book number two from this series.
I found that Ann’s writing was very similar to one of my favorites – Janet Evanovich. The silliness and crazy situations the main character finds herself in really does make me think of the Stephanie Plum series that I LOVE! While I do not know much about South Dakota, it was a lot of fun to read about some of the places I visited while on my quick trip last month. It makes it easy to put myself in Deadwood as I am reading.
I enjoyed the story of Violet, a single mom of two kiddos. I could relate to the single aspect, the idea of dating and the crazy day to day she found herself living as a busy working mom. I did wish the character development was a bit deeper but knowing that there are many books to follow this one, I am anxious to keep getting to know Violet and her family, coworkers and friends!
I would recommend this book to anyone who loves South Dakota and silly fiction stories that help you escape from life.
