A few weekends ago we celebrated Jude turning 9 years old with a special Harry Potter Birthday Party with some great friends and family. This Harry Potter themed party had been in Jude’s mind for many months. He was so excited when we started the planning. While the Colorado weather did not completely go as planned, it was a great celebration! Check out how we weaved Harry Potter into our food, decorations, activities and fun during our Harry Potter Birthday Party.
Planning A Harry Potter Birthday Party
When we started planning Jude’s Harry Potter Birthday Party we were looking to incorporate all of the houses. Now, let me be clear, I have no idea about Harry Potter – yup it is true! So I had to do a lot of research and have Jeremy help me with ideas and themes for the food, decorations and activities.

Harry Potter Birthday Cake
While we didn’t get to use our normal cake lady we did have a great experience with a local bakery. Jude was so excited to share his cake idea and it turned out perfectly. For the cake table we added some of Jude’s Harry Potter Funko Pop characters to give it a little extra Harry Potter magic.
Every year we have to take a picture in front of his cake and it is so fun to look back at the photos from years ago. He is growing to quickly!!
Just like we do all of our parties we like to decorate inside around the cake and food. I found a great deal at Party City this year on the Harry Potter decor. Jude loved it because it had all of the houses on the plates, napkins and tablecloths.
Harry Potter Birthday Party Food
I was a little nervous about finding the best Harry Potter food for the party but I think we did a great job with our lunch spread!! My very favorite item on our food table was our Hedwig fruit try. My mother-in-law did this and it worked so well!! So adorable!
The rest of the food we tried to tie in as many characters and themes from Harry Potter as possible.
Hufflepuff puffs were our cheese puffs, Hedwig Favorite Fruit, and Hagrid’s Meat and Cheese Tray. We also had a ton of pizza available for the main dish.
Professor Sprouts Veggie Garden for our large veggie tray, House popcorn made from our favorite party popcorn recipe and some chocolate frogs! I decided to make our own chocolate frogs by purchasing a frog candy tray. It worked great and these frogs were delicious.

Harry Potter Birthday Party Activities
While we had planned on just having a pool party the weather had other plans. It was a chilly 69 degrees when the party started so we had to figure out some fun Harry Potter themed activities to keep the kids entertained. We decided to paint our own wands and create our own Quidditch set.
Using hulu hoops and PVC pipes, Jeremy created such a fun life size game of Quidditch. The kids played for over an hour! They had so much fun and we will be keeping our set for other backyard games later. I hope to share a DIY of this project soon.
Harry Potter Birthday Party Favor Bags
I totally forgot to take a picture of the fun favor bags that Jude gave his friends at his party. We filled up the bags with some candy, fun looking keys, Harry Potter bookmarks and Harry Potter beans! All of these items were big hits with the kids. I loved that they were simple items but really went with the Harry Potter theme.
Even with the crazy weather we had a great time and Jude is still talking about how much he loved his Harry Potter Birthday Party. Hard to believe that this is the last year of Jude being in the single digits!!
What themed party are you planning this year?
