Something that I have been wanting to do to my living room for years finally is complete! Excited to share a little living room update with you today! There have been a lot of changes in this home and this one was much needed. 2021 is for smashing goals and now I get to mark off another goal as achieved!
Updated Living Room Space
The couch that was in my upstairs living room, the main living area of the home, had been in this living room for about 15 years. It was worn and broken. Prior to the divorce we had talked about, even picked out, new couches but for obvious reasons that never happened. As I started making my goals for 2021 I knew that updating the living room space upstairs and creating a new family room downstairs was on my TO DO list for this year.
To be honest, I have wanted to do these updates through out the home to help me mourn the loss of my marriage and create some new spaces and memories in this home with my kids. Since this is the area that we spend the most time in, I knew it had to be done!
Bright – Updated – Clean
Don’t you love it? First of all, I love that this space does not have that ugly brownish, yellowish glow anymore. Sure the color of the flooring has not changed but with a fresh coat of WHITE paint through out the upstairs and the addition of black, white and grey to the furniture and rug I think that yellow tint that I HATE is finally gone!!
It really is amazing how a coat of paint can really change a room. The memories that I hold in this room will always be here but it is really nice to get a fresh start too.
The Process – One Step At A Time
I started this transformation when I decided that I would use some extra time that I had to paint my living room. This was a big task as this also meant that I would be painting the hallway, kitchen wall, and entry way. SO MUCH PAINTING!! But, I got the painting bug and went for it. I painted the tan a nice BRIGHT WHITE!!
I knew that I wanted to update the couch due to it being broken but also really wanted to get rid of the brown and tan tones in the room. I found a great deal on these grey loveseats that I decided would be a great match to my espresso entertainment center. I updated the side tables and coffee tables as well and then decided to splurge on a perfect reading area accent chair that I LOVE!!
I added a super soft area rug that really tied everything together. Now this space feels updated, clean and BRIGHT – which is exactly what I was hoping for.
The Finishing Touches – Make It Mine!
I decided to update the wall décor with some new pictures and wall hangings. I went for a fun saying at the door that gives me and the kids a nice reminder as we leave the house and I added a pretty stained glass flower to the window over the door. I had a big open space on the newly painted wall and after a lot of searching I decided to go with a 3 piece canvas hanging of the world. I thought this was a great addition to our living room. The kids and I often talk about traveling and one day I hope I can take the kids to more places around the world. The black, grey, white and navy in this canvas hanging worked great.
Of course I found some new throw blankets to add to our space and now we are all ready for some great snuggles, movie nights and gatherings in our newly refreshed and updated living room!
Before and After
I love sharing my before and after shots because it helps me see that the hard work paid off! While that broken couch is getting a new life in the downstairs family room, I am happy to see it go from this space. Now the downstairs family room has a new look and the upstairs living room is ready for some new family snuggles and gatherings.
What’s Next?
I like to think ahead but for 2021, I think I am done painting and doing big room updates. Instead I will be focusing on cleaning up Jude and Teagan’s rooms and start focusing on the playroom as well. The big goal is to eventually turn the playroom into Jude’s room – this will put both kids in the basement and allow them to have their own space as they get older downstairs. Again…this is a big goal that will not happen this year!! Instead, the rest of the year will be focused on decluttering!
I love this space now but I am also excited that the old couch was able to be moved downstairs so I can start creating a nice family room space downstairs as well. That room started becoming the catch all of junk and I am real sick of that! So many new beginnings in a home that is packed full of family memories. Ready to make some new memories now too!
